For those who wish to actively enjoy the wild and wonderful Atlantic Ocean, the beautiful coastal climes of the Algarve offer ample opportunities for water sports.

Algarve fishing is excellent, especially off the western shore near Sagres. Anglers can choose from charter trips or individual excursions offered at most ports along the coast. Sea bass, bluefish, moray eel, scabbard fish and gray mullet are among the most commonly caught varieties.

The peak Algarve fishing season occurs during the months of October through January. Fishing boat departure times and excursion fees can be found posted on boards set up at quayside.

The western Algarve ports of Portomao, Lagos, Praia de Rocha and Sagres maintain harbors that offer scuba diving excursions. Rock formations and caverns are common along the coast here, and knowledgeable divers can enjoy some adventurous hours beneath the waves.

The western Algarve is also popular for board surfing and wind surfing. Surfing enthusiasts from many parts of Europe enjoy the secluded beaches in this southernmost part of Portugal.
