An inland town with medieval Moorish roots, Silves was once a very important centre of commerce and government in the Algarve. The 12th century fortress (fortaleza), part of which still watches over the town, is proof of Silva’s former grandeur. The town was a stronghold of resistance against the Crusaders, who eventually took over the region and its considerable riches. It faded from the frontier after sustaining major earthquake damage in 1755.
A visit to Silves provides the opportunity for a change of pace from the seaside environment, enjoyable dining and market shopping, and to learn more about the history of the Algarve and its people.
