Beaches are the compelling attraction of Sagres, a village located in the wilder section of western Algarve. The present village was mostly built during the 1800s after the original was destroyed in the earthquake of 1755.
Sagres Fortress dominates the village, with its huge, solid walls and imposing battlements. The Wind Compass dates back to the times of Prince Henry the Navigator, and some say that the fortress was his home. It was restored during the 17th century, and within its walls sits a modern building that serves as a museum of local history and colour.
