Visitor Attractions

Faro

Site of Faro International Airport, there are many reasons for visitors to linger here and enjoy the scenery before heading to other fabulous Algarve destinations. Faro’s Old Town, called Cidade Velha, still contains the remains of some of the medieval walls along with other historic structures.

These landmarks link the city to a past that includes foundation by the Moors, near destruction by the English at the end of the 16th century, and the destruction wrought by two earthquakes in the 1700s. The result is a combination of architectural styles from various centuries, and a charming place to visit and explore.

Rua de San Antonio is the centre for restaurants, shops, sidewalk commerce and general tourist attraction. The district was settled by a group of Jewish merchants from Morocco in the 1800s, and became the area’s main trade district. An old, abandoned Jewish cemetery remains.
