Beaches around Sagres

The beaches here at the south westernmost tip of continental Europe are a bit more isolated, with slightly colder water, more wind and wilder surf. They are strikingly beautiful and for decades have been the domain of hikers and surfers. Some of the beaches here are more difficult to access because they are sheltered by tall and majestic cliffs. Here are some of the more popular beaches:

Praia de Mareta – located at the edge of the village of Sagres, just beyond its village square.

Praia de Baleira – just past the town, this beach is located along the harbour.

Praia de Martinhal – largest of the Sagres beaches and probably rated as the best for general bathing.

Tonel – a surfer’s paradise.

Praia de Belixe – one mile past Sagres, heading toward Cape St. Vincent, is noted for its unspoiled natural beauty. Beware of the strong nortadas, or northerly winds, that blow here.
